Bricklayuers require a Safety Pack that includes a Safe work Method Statement (SWMS).
Your Safety Pack must be "readily accessible" while you are working on site, so we recommend that you keep a copy in your vehicle, and/or an electronic copy on a mobile device (smartphone or tablet).

Sole Trader

An Bricklayers s with no apprentices and no employees will need:

1. White Card.

You must have a white card to work on a construction site.

 

2. Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS).

Bricklaying contractors perform high risk construction work so you need a SWMS document that covers those work activities, for example:

    • Bricklaying
    • Brick saw
    • Petrol operated hoist
    • Working at heights

3. Safety Data Sheets (SDS)

You will need to have Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for any hazardous chemical bought on site or stored in your vehicle or at your workshop.

4. Hazardous chemicals register

As well as SDS's (above) you will also need to keep a "Hazardous chemicals register" for chemicals bought on site or stored in your workshop or vehicle.

 

5. Emergency procedure

An Emergency procedure describes what to do in an emergency, and includes an emergency contact list of phone numbers to call such as fire, ambulance, & hospitals.

 

6. Incidents reporting procedure

An incidents reporting procedure describes the steps to report a serious incident at work. You should also have a , along with an incident Report Form that the State authority requires to be filled in. It is mandatory to report all serious incidents to SafeWork (or WorkSafe) in your state.

 

7. Hazard report form

A Hazard report form is used to record hazards identified on site along with the control measures that you will implement to reduce the risk of injury to you or any other workers. The information recorded on your Hazard Report Form can be included in your SWMS or JSA.

 

8. Tag & Test Register

A  Tag & Test Register is required for all Electrical equipment – the tags on the leads of electrical equipment are sufficient to meet with this requirement, as long as they don't fall off. This includes RCD’s.

 

Bricklayers with up to 3 Personnel

For a business with up to 3 employees we recommend all of the 8 items listed for the sole Trader plus:

 

9. Employee Inductions

You will need an employee induction procedure, along with evidence that employees have been inducted and received adequate training for their work activity. This is recorded on a Training Matrix Spreadsheet.

 

Bricklayers with over 5 Personnel

For a business with over 5  personnel, we recommend that you engage a WH & S Advisor to prepare a safety pack for your business.
